Canmore is surrounded by several Alberta Provincial Parks, with the closest being Canmore Nordic Centre and Bow Valley Provincial Park. Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park is filled with over 65 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails during the winter and over 100 kilometres of mountain biking trails during the summer. Canmore was originally established in 1884 as a coal mining town. When the last mine shut down in 1979, Canmore’s economy took a hit, and its future was uncertain. When Calgary held the Olympics in 1988, Canmore was chosen to host the cross-country and biathlon events. This brought a whole new group of tourists, developers, and eager new citizens which helped turn the town into what it is today – a lively tourism destination.
One of Canmore’s best-known views is of the Three Sisters Mountains. Individually, from left to right, they are known as Big Sister (or Faith), Middle Sister (or Charity), and Little Sister (or Hope).
