Churchill is one of the only places in the world where polar bears outnumber people during the fall! With a population of around 800 residents and over 1,000 polar bears passing through as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze, the town has developed unique safety measures. The Polar Bear Alert Program helps keep both bears and people safe, with patrols, warning sirens, and even a “Polar Bear Jail” for bears that wander too close to town.
