Engaging in canyoning and immersing oneself in nature can offer a much-needed escape from the stresses of daily life. The physical exertion and focus required during canyoning can help clear the mind, reduce stress, and promote overall mental well-being.
Canyoning offers a unique opportunity to venture off the beaten path and explore lesser-known natural wonders. The excitement of discovery and the feeling of accomplishment after successfully navigating through canyons can inspire a lifelong passion for adventure and exploration.
Be sure to dress comfortably in quick-drying, athletic clothing (preferably synthetic or moisture-wicking materials) and wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good traction, suitable for wet environments. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses for sun protection. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes, a towel, and a waterproof bag for your belongings. Pack your wilderness survival essentials (first aid kit, navigation, food, water, knife, fire starter, communication, and a backpack) to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Your canyoning tour or guide should provide you with the specialized gear needed for the adventure (helmet, harness, descender, locking carabiners, wetsuit, gloves, and life jacket, if needed). They will also supply necessary equipment like ropes, anchors, and slings for a safe and exciting canyoning experience.
Anytime you decide to go explore nature, you should…
Don’t try this alone! We highly recommend booking a guided canyoning adventure so that a pro can show you the ropes (literally).
Choose Appropriate Footwear! – Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction and ankle support, designed for wet environments. Proper footwear helps maintain grip on slippery surfaces, ensuring safety and stability during your canyoning adventure.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings – Stay vigilant and be mindful of potential hazards, such as slippery rocks, strong currents, and sudden changes in weather. By being aware of your environment and adapting accordingly, you can help minimize risks and make your canyoning adventure more enjoyable.
Go slow as you rappel back down to avoid knocking your knees against a wall of rock!
Canyoning has its roots in the sport of caving, which dates back to the late 19th century. As cavers began exploring underground river systems, they developed techniques for descending and traversing through water-filled canyons, ultimately paving the way for modern-day canyoning. Today, the sport has evolved into a thrilling adventure that combines elements of climbing, rappelling, and swimming, allowing participants to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking and remote landscapes.
