About Snowmobiling

Snowmobiles are powerful machines that can accommodate one or two riders, tow trailers or skiers, and gain access to parts of the great outdoors you probably didn’t know existed. A snowmobiling tour is an epic way to explore the Canadian wilderness, ranging anywhere from an hour of excitement to weeks-long adventures.

Avalanche Safety

Go in a Group

This activity is not for solo artists. In the event of an avalanche, riders fare much better with friends looking out for them.

Three Important Items

Every rider in the group should have a shovel, probe, and beacon, and know how to use all three.

Know The Terrain

Go with a tour that knows the area. Avoid areas with little or no run-out as well as spaces with few or no trees.

Essential Gear and Equipment

Ensure you have warm, waterproof boots, layers of warm clothing (including a base layer that will wick sweat from the body), and those wilderness survival essentials (first aid kit, navigation, food, water, knife, fire starter, communication, and a backpack). A helmet is non-negotiable at break-neck speeds and nose-bleed heights!

Tips

Anytime you decide to go explore nature, you should…

Check the weather.
Research the trail and take a map with you.
Carry the proper gear for the experience.
Bring extra food.
Tell someone where you are going.
Check with the Parks or tourism office for closures and wildlife updates.
Follow the Leave No Trace principles.
Do not feed, touch or approach wildlife.

Get off your butt: you might feel like sitting, but standing up or placing a knee on the seat will help you gain better control of the machine.

Get ready to sweat: it’s pretty much guaranteed you will get stuck at some point, and that’s okay – but get ready to dig, dig, dig and pull that heavy machine out of the snow trap.

Stow your items: if you’re bringing your smartphone, don’t leave it in an outside pocket! Between cold temperatures and potential falls, it’s better off closer to the chest.

Did You Know?

The small community of Alberta Beach hosts an annual winter festival called SnoMo Days, where you can see sledders (and sleds!) of all ages race for glory. From little ones on baby snowmobiles to old timers on antiques, and of course the souped-up modified sleds, drag races offer plenty of entertainment while you sip on hot chocolate and chow down on winter BBQ items. Most attendees arrive on their own sleds as well!
